Introduction

Nearly everyone has heard of Descartes’ famous declaration: “I think, therefore, I am.” But how many of us can explain what it means? And what about mathematician and theologian Blaise Pascal’s invitation to place a “wager” on our eternal salvation? Descartes and Pascal represent two of the greatest minds of the 17th century. They were both brilliant mathematicians, both skilled rhetoricians and deep thinkers, and both men of strong faith. But while Descartes used the power of logic to spread his belief in God, Pascal rejected the approach as “useless and uncertain,” preferring rhetoric and probability theory over syllogistic proof. This lesson will give you a taste of the work of two men of faith in the Age of Reason.
