Introduction

This lesson introduces you to the seventeenth century—a period in which the power of the king reached its apogee. As you read, keep in mind that these are only highlights of a rich history. Omissions are inevitable. You will be responsible for the content covered, but that does not mean you should restrict your learning. Wander through Web sites or through the aisles of your local library to learn more.

Objective

After carefully studying this lesson you should be able to explain how France changed under the most important political figures of the seventeenth century, and to distinguish baroque and classical trends in literature and art. You will learn about the moralistes and their critique of human folly during the so-called “Age of Reason”. In particular, you will learn to appreciate the social commentary embedded in La Fontaine’s Fables and in the maximes of François de La Rochefoucauld.
