Writing Assignment 2

Nous allons terminer cette leçon avec un devoir écrit qui vous permettra d’écrire votre propre essai. Pour obtenir une appréciation plus grande pour les Essais, et pour vous aider à voir où vos idées se rapprochent et s’éloignent de celles de Montaigne, vous allez faire une expérience, faire une tentative ou en d’autres mots écrire un essai. Voici les étapes (en anglais):

  1. Choose the title of your essay from the list of Montaigne’s essay titles given below (or any other title other than « Des cannibales »).
  2. Write a short essay (approx. 2 double-spaced pages, in French, of course!) on that topic. You should make the essay both about the topic and about yourself. You should also throw in a quote or two (no need to translate the quotes!) from authors that have been part of your own education. Write the essay BEFORE, you consult Montaigne’s version.
  3. AFTER you have written your own essay, read the essay by Montaigne that shares your title. You can find the essays in English on the internet thanks to the Project Gutenberg(http://www.gutenberg.org/files/3600/3600-h/3600-h.htm) or you can go to a library or bookstore. If you use a library or purchase Montaigne’s Essays, I suggest the excellent translation by M.A. Screech (No, not that Screech) published by Penguin. For the purposes of this assignment, it is not the end of the world if you choose to read the essay in English. After all, we are not talking about a two page excerpt here.
  4. After you have written your essay and read the essay by Montaigne, write a brief comparison of your two essays. Any similarities ? Differences ? Other comments ?
  5. You're done. Breathe a sigh of relief and start studying for the first test: Middle Ages and Renaissance.
